Not sure when Suzuki made the change to the five speed tranny- they stopped importing the Savage in North American markets from 1989 through 1994.

When the bike came back on this side of the pond - it did so with a five speed transmission.

The bike was manufactured continuosly - it was just that Suzuki marketting folks had some better ideas where the bike would be most useful.
